One of the reasons The Dootz’s moved to the
western slope of Colorado was because of its
great fly fishing. Within three to three and a
half hours from our base camp is some of the
best fly fishing in the United States. Most of
the rivers we fish are much closer, so
Montrose is a great central location for fishing
and all outdoor activities.
One of the top rivers in the region is the
Gunnison River. This river forms the
foundation for multiple fly fishing adventures as
there are thousands of miles of water because
of the numerous streams and rivers flowing
into it. In the Gunnison gorge, a component of
the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National
Park, we witness a fantastic stonefly hatch
every year in late June and early July. This
attracts anglers from all over the world.
In addition to our main river, we also have the
world famous Frying Pan and Roaring Fork
River within a reasonable drive. To our south,
we have the San Miguel and Delores rivers.
Some other rivers we like include the Taylor
and the Arkansas. The Arkansas River hosts
the Mother’s Day caddis hatch that attracts
numerous anglers. The Taylor has a famous
trophy catch and release area that fishes 12
months of the year and is the home of some of
the largest trout you can imagine.
We will keep you updated with lots of fishing
stories and adventures on where to fish and
some fly patterns that are effective in our
rivers. I can’t say that we will reveal all our
secrets, but we will help you enjoy visiting our
region and regularly provide you with plenty of
tips on where to go, when to go, and what flies
work the best.
